Man on Fire - Candice Tyson

The opening shot to the sequence is an establishing shot of the town the movie is set in. The lighting is quite low and the setting appears to be foggy. The foggy low lit setting in play with the non-diegetic violin music gives a negative feel to the start of the movie, this is through the use of pathetic fallacy.

The sequence then moves on to a variety of sped up and slowed down shots and there is a lot of discontinuity editing used . These shots in play with the music starts to build some tension as the music is contrapuntal to the emotion shown on the characters' faces, making it feel as if something is going to happen. The camera also jolts a lot making the atmosphere feel unsteady. The use of discontinuity editing matches the unsettling mood.

In this shot there is the repetition of a child laughing as the text is shown on the screen, the aim of this would be to grip the person watching and their emotions.

The shot then goes and reveals a second bit of shocking information and while this happens the child's laugh fades out and so does the color. This could represent the life of a child fading away.

All of a sudden the music changes and the number of shots speeds up showing the kidnapping of a man. There is a lot of handheld camera work which adds to the panic and intensity of what is happening as the camera is not still but is jolting and moving around with the action.

At the end of the sequence there is quite a stereotypical shot of a damsel in distress which is often how women are portrayed in the media. The spectator is is expected to feel sorry for this women and this is done by portraying her innocence. She is framed in a way that makes it look like she's helpless and distressed yet although there are loads of people on the street no one is around her to help.
