Editing Ideas - Mae Webb

Body of Lies - I watched this film and noticed a really effective flashback and coming in and out of conciousness scene which I think will give us some good ideas for our editing.

It used the fade to white effect that we want to use for our opening as it creates a dream like effect as he's going in and out of conciousness.

  • It then had a series of different shots showing his memories, the lighting was very unnatural in each shot and wasn't consistant, for example it was very bright in some shots almost white lighting and in others it was a lot darker, and as shown below one shot was  lmost tinted red. This gave a good effect as it made the sequence more distorted, so it onfused the audience and was not just straightforward, meaning the audience get more of a sense of how the character is feeling. It also gave a different mood to each flashback shot showing the good memories and the bad memories.

  • Some of the shots were point of view shots compared to the others that included the character in the shot, this gives a good effect as it shows that the character is thinking about how he was in these flashbacks and not just focused on what he saw. It also allows the audience to get a better insight to the character because they see how he interacts with other characters and what his facial expressions are in each shot enabling us to see if he feels they are a happy memory or not.

  • After these flashbacks they have used the fade in from white effect again to create the effect that he is gaining conciousness, they have used different shots and angles, for example a point of view shot, a birds eye view shot to make it seem distorted and to show that the character feels confused and his mind is all over the place.
  • We can use these techniques when editing our flashback scenes for our thriller opening as they will give us the effect that we want to create and give the right message.
