- The effect of rippling water is used throughout the opening title sequence. With text placed over the top in white, block capitals and also using a rippling effect by having a font that miss places the letters. The text stays the same throughout
- Then an image of an eagle appears in the water to suggest stalking, prey and suggests to the audience there may be stalking and killing of characters within the film as an eagle kills. The fact that the eagle is seen through the water also suggests that the eagle isn't meant to be seen and is from a far, possibly suggesting this will be like the protagonists role.
- Throughout there is non-diegetic sound creating an atmosphere and suspense by using orchestral instruments, violins creating a higher pitch and then drums to contrast and create a sense of danger. Then as the title appears on the screen the non-diegetic sound because much louder and stronger, this enhances the title of the film and creates fear as the audience question what does this film entail. As well as this the change in the sound ties in with the title 'Cape Fear' as it expresses elements of fear. The title is also very central, whereas before text has been mainly on the left hand side this shows that this is important.
- After the title is shown, a blurred image of an eye starts to appear, the image is in black and white and you can tell by the width of the eye and it quickly moving around that the character's eye's facial expression is showing fear.
- More names then appear on the water, however they are placed in different areas on the screen (moving from left to right). A new name appears each time the non-diegetic sound gets louder and the pace gets quicker and higher pitched. This instigates time running out or panic. But there is still the continual non-diegetic sound we've heard from the beginning. Then an image of lips appear and we track through them to a black screen.
- The water images change, showing different colours and waves moving in opposite ways, with a quick CU image of a man. This makes the audience wonder if he is the protagonist and this therefore fits in with a thriller as it's keeping the audience guessing and giving them little clues. This is followed by red being brought onto the rippling water, this is used to look like blood perhaps being washed away therefore making the audience question why is there going to be blood- possibly foreshadowing a murder.
- We then get an image of a man's shadow, this makes the audience question if the person has killed someone- if its the protagonist.
Run Lola Run
- This title sequence starts with quotations from something, but as it's in German there are subtitles underneath. Therefore the audience are told its a German film and by having white writing on a black background there is an element of seriousness and makes the writing more prominent to the reader and shows that its important.
- Non-diegetic sound that starts quite quiet with a ticking clock over the top, suggesting that time is a key factor. You then get a diegetic sound over the top of a massive clock swinging back and forth, this sound also suggests that it is heavy and this is enhanced by what the clock seems to be made out of.
- The text is a quirky stereotypical thriller/horror movie, also suggesting the film is set in another Country and the text moves up close to the screen before the clock swipes it away. This may suggest to the audience that time will take over throughout the film. The camera then moves in closer to the clock as it's still starting from a MCU to and ECU of the clock and then tilts and pans up to the top of the clock this is done with relatively fast pace. The bottom of the clock looks old and scary, maybe suggesting this is something important. You then move to black through the clock and see lots of people moving around quickly.
Fargo
- The Non-diegetic sound creates a light-hearted innocent feel about the opening. The titling starts with paper houses being made and moving from the white background followed then by words also moving from the white background but the houses are then repeated. The repetition of the house suggests to the audience that the film could be set in a street/neighborhood surrounded by people that all know each other.
- Although the ND sound is light and flowing, the lyrics are much deeper 'the killing will come to soon' helping to enhance death and murder.
- Throughout the opening, it is all made out of paper/card and different objects are created and used to hint different things in the film. There is no action just maquettes. The camera work is shaken and unsteady and it tracks through to different names etc. The lighting of specific objects highlights the tension as the audience question why are these specific objects standing out. As well as this the objects are used to move the titling along, for instance the camera follows the moving car across the screen bringing another name appear on the screen.
- The repetition of a gun is used therefore showing the audience or suggesting that there will be a shooting at some point.
- As the titling of the film appears, the camera's angle changes and becomes a birds eye view of the titling, the shadow effect, means the titling goes from white stenciled writing like all the other title credits etc and moves to a bold titling in black enhancing the importance of the title. As well as this, the change in the font colour and shadow suggests a time change.
